Singapore A Cappella Scene Sep 2005

From the Desk of The A Cappella Society – September 05 Hello again everyone! What a month this has been! We sold out for A CappellaFest and had a wonderful time with our groups, including guest group, Wicked Pitches from KL. Yes, and as reviews come, there is always something to learn from every event and every programme. Ha ha It’s true! One sliver lining in this event was our feature segment on Channel News Asia’s Singapore beat and Suria’s news beat. Local groups Tone, Tic Tac Tone, Juz B were featured along our friends the Wicked Pitches. Well done to all the groups who put their best foot forward and that too on a really large stage (and by that I mean size!!). Thank you also to our sponsors the Arts Fund and the National Arts Council and our contributors, Alex and Ivan who designed our flyers and logo and to Valentia Heng for the T-shirt layout and of course our youth team who are always there to lend a helping hand, from copy writing to manual labour and support. Kudos! Lots of

Tic Tac Tone's Secret Diary

[left to right: Tic Tac Tone = Gene, Roy, Serene, Alina, Ken & Khar Liang] I went on the 2nd-cum-last night of Tic Tac Tone's Secret Diary concert on 10 Sept 2005 Saturday night at the Esplanade Recital Studio. The 2-night concert is a celebration for TTT's 5 years of songs & laughter. Heard that it was full house on the 9 Sep night before. Tic Tac Tone (TTT) is a mixed a cappella sextet consisting of 4 guys & 2 gals. Its members are Serene (soprano), Alina (alto), Roy (tenor), Ken (baritone), Gene (baritone cum vocal percussionist) & Khar Liang (bass). Well, their programme booklet came in the form of a CD album cover which gives a brief description of what TTT is about. They had 2 solo concerts before - "Music" (2002) & "In Transit" (2003) as well as a collaboration with the Necessary Stage in a community play this year and Sing Song (2004). The stage had no props, save for 6 high chairs. TTT came onto the stage with casual wear &a

Review of Acafest 2005

Firstly, the emcee gave very lame speeches as well as trying too hard to be funny & misprouncing words quite a few times. He even seem so... disinterested. The public must be feeling that they're "ripped off" due to the "amateurish" performance of the performers as many left the show after the 1st half of the show. The 1st group Juz B who won an a cappella competition in Taiwan lack the "funk" despite having an impressive self-written number "Funkified (Juz B)". Pretty slick moves & wardrobe . The really weak vocal percussion and the back ground voices & the lead...well... ain't that "funky" enough. Well, the only song that they managed well was "Qing Fei De Yi". Impressive for a group of Malay guys who can sing in Chinese in a diction clearer than most Chinese locally. Next group, Lao Langs , Weak lead. Their 1st number "Mummer's Dance" proved to be sleep-inducing & the lyrics couldn'
