Vocaluptuous' "Lush.Pop. Jazz" concert review

Lush. Pop. Jazz. The concert title certainly had me guessing what the evening would be like before I went for the concert. The Vocaluptuous that I had heard eons ago before the member change was a group with sleek and tight harmony with a very good jazzy feel. The group had undergone a 2-member change and it seemed to be for the better. The evening was really lovely with a lush, snazzy retro-like backdrop (with a retro disco ball hung at the ceiling) which gives a overall, relaxed atmosphere which was almost lounge-like. Vocaluptuous gave an opening of " Take 5 " whom i'm not too sure who sang the song originally. John, the latest member of the group sang convincingly as lead. Take 5 was given a local flavour treatment which had a hint of humor in it. What really impressed was one of the songs which had a small insertion of Geylang Sipaku Geylang (which probably means come home in Malay) which was a lovely effort in the song product of John's collaboration with his

Budak Pantai Unplucked

What do they say birds of a feather do? Flocking together as Budak Pantai are five guys who enjoy singing as much as they do Monty Python (and chicken rice). They may attempt a cappella and even perform some of their own compositions but don't let that fool you - they're really "bad" singers. But if it's entertainment you're looking for - and frankly, laughing your way into 2007 is a good way to end the year - then why not flock to Esplanade this December to catch Budak Pantai do their thing? Raw fun. Unplucked, essentially.Yes, Unplucked. Because what this concert is all about is five local funny guys letting loose and making music their way.Budak Pantai has been in the local music scene for over 12 years and has a sizeable (and growing) following here, which probably means they must be doing something right. Review on Rockapella's Nov 15 concert

Below is a short review of US a cappella group who peformed last night (Nov 15) at Esplanade concert hall. Rockapella catapulted to stardom after snapping up an opportunity to perform on TV, "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?". The theme song was a hit which was also sung by the group in the concert. From the classic oldies like My Girl (by the Temptations) and to Motown-tinged tunes and spirituals such as Papa Was A Rolling Stone , they gave an edgy sound to each & every song whether be it blues, pop or rock & roll. While most groups tend to do to overdo the vocal percussion bit, the group's beatboxer, Jeff Thatcher's percussive beats were smooth and balanced. They brought easy listening hits such as Love Potion #9 , Use Me , Long Cool Woman and the audience really lapped it up. The group even threw smiley balls at the audience and one of its members got to the audience side to invite a lady onto the stage and seranaded her. Rockapella truly milked t

THE BEAUTY OF HUMAN VOICE Hippest a cappella group swinging by Singapore - Singapore, 25th Sep, 2006 Rockapella , regarded as the biggest name in contemporary a cappella, is coming to Singapore for the very first time on 15th November. Their ingenious vocal talent creates flawless harmonies with spirited funk energy. USA TODAY simply puts it, some say the best musical instrument of all is the human voice.“ if you've seen Rockapella you know that's the truth. Formed in the States in the mid-eighties, the most visible practitioners of new doo-wop vocals is best-known for its contributions to the award-winning Public Broadcasting Station show." Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego ?". Riding on the buzz was an appearance in HBO's hit family series " Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child " alongside with Hollywood celebrities Whoopi Goldberg and Denzel Washington. The success the group gained in television and radio led to the completion of six r

Key Elements @ blue Moo lowdown

Key Elements ( KE ) performed last night on 25 Aug 2006, a Friday night to abt 200-strong audience for about an hour and a half at blue Moo cafe, a virtual cafe at the cosy rooftop of YMCA Orchard. KE performed jazz-influenced numbers like Moonglow and a medley which consisted of several well-known tunes ranging from Beatles to Broadway, as well as a country song, Gettin' Over Me (which was pretty impressible). However, despite being veteran singers themselves, the entertainment value is strangely lacking. The good thing is that they are good singers with vocal quality who could sing jazz style sleekly.

Open mic - the lowdown

This is probably the first a cappella open mic in the Singapore Art Cafe (SAC) within Esplanade library but it was a success ! There was an opening act by a nameless trio who sang with guitar accompaniment. Pretty good act. The first group who came on stage to kick off the open mic was M18 , an all-male sextet aged between 16 to 18 years of age who gave a convincing rendition of Our Story , originally sung by Tension and Lady Marmalade (from the movie Moulin Rouge). The second group Vocollision , a mixed quintet who hailed from NUS a cappella club Resonance gave a stellar performance of Sukiyaki , Pu Tong Peng You (originally sung by David Tao), and Change in my life (adapted from Rockapella and M-pact) which showed off their sleek song arrangement & harmony. By the way, the group recently appeared on air on radio station 93.8 FM thanks to the open mic organiser from SAC. After the performances by both groups, there was a vocal jamming session where the audience can come up on s
