The A Cappella Society – Press Release May 2008

The A Cappella Society presents I-SO-TONIC, featuring a cappella group TONE, an effervescent group of 5 young and talented singers. You'll be treated to a gastronomic array of current hits like Umbrella, Juicy, Nothing In This World as well as songs from musical greats like Teresa Teng and Stevie Wonder, all done in a cappella fashion!«I-SO-TONIC» is about new beginnings. It is a time for friends, family and a cappella fans to travel on this musical journey with TONE as they present their first public concert.

The A Cappella Society presents:

Camp A Cappella 08

A 2-day music camp that will work with a cappella singers new and current to ‘transpose’ them from the stoic choral singer to an enlivened singer, full of inspiration, commitment and confidence who will bring that energy back to school choirs and more!

This camp will serve to help all singers, choral or not to appreciate pop and jazz a cappella in a whole new way. We aim to showcase to singers the differences and more importantly the similarities in singing techniques in a cappella versus choral performance. This camp will also touch on the wide array of skill sets unique to a cappella singing & performance.
15 June (adults) 9am - 5pm, Telok Ayer Performing Arts Centre
16-17 June (students) 9am - 5pm, SMU arts & culture centre

A Cappella Championships 08

The Aca Champs, as it is endearingly known as, is a programme that aims to provide positive reinforcement for all participating groups through positive feedback, encouragement and non-political support for all groups.

It also serves as an annual testing ground for local and new pop / jazz a cappella groups to compete against one another in a friendly environment, winning prizes that would enable them to reach more performance platforms and opportunities through the society. A new category this year extends the competition to choirs and vocal ensembles.

It has over the last 7 years become THE annual a cappella competition which singers look forward to attending and competing in, allowing them to watch and learn from other teams and for them to access for themselves, the development of standards across the categories each year. The inclusion of international groups raises the standard of the competition and A Cappella in Singapore .

Vocal skills

If you are primarily a  beatboxer / vocal percussionist , please give us a  demonstration (approx 2-3 mins) , which can include anything and everything you’re comfortable with (straight-ahead beats, fills, freestyle beatboxing, etc).  ALSO, please include a segment where you do a simple beat at a comfortable tempo along with a metronome.  No need to be flashy for this part, we just want to see that you can keep a solid tempo. If you are primarily a bass singer , sing us a  bass line  using bass syllables (dm, doom, bm, ba, etc.) and also a  bass vocal solo . The bass line can be something you just make up, or it can be an existing bass line. For the bass vocal solo, think along the lines of Old Man River, but it can be any song in any style. We just want to hear you sing a low range solo with lyrics. The House Jacks in Singapore!!

Review: Our local percussionist star, Peter Huang opened the show for the House Jacks (HJs). He introduced a song or 2 from his debut solo album which the instruments were vocalised by him using layering to create a 'band sound'. However, the audience didn't take to his performance. It was grating to the ears when he made certain sounds: more like noise than music to the ears. There was a slight limp in his leg since his recovery from an accident, which prevented him from dancing around the stage too much. I think it's better that he sticks to his vocal percussion than his weak singing or hiphop rap. People were more impressed with his percussion than him singing or rapping. Good & tight harmony I would say. If you have heard Wes Carrol, the group percussionist, Peter Huang seem amateurish. Real solid vocal percussion from Wes. INTERNATIONAL A CAPPELLA FESTIVAL 14 -18OCT 2009 The A Cappella Society would like to invite you to our International A Cappella Festival for 2009. The Festival will take place at the Esplanade Recital Studio and The Arts House Chamber. It will be spread over a period of 5 days, beginning on the 14th of October 2009 and ending on the 18th of October 2009. The International A Cappella Festival will showcase performances from 4 different foreign groups compromising of Permanent Fish from Japan, Rock 4 from The Netherlands, MayTree from Korea and Tux from The Philippines. This year’s line up of a cappella teams features a variety of musical styles with rock music from Queen, Police & Sting by Rock 4 (Netherlands), Pop from Permanent Fish (Japan), Korean Pop from MayTree and the golden oldies and familiar favorites from Tux (Philippines).
