From The Desk Of The A Cappella Society - December 2003

Ho Ho Ho everyone! Christmas is round the corner and we are happy to share with you that November has simply been a really awesome month! We’ve had the pleasure of meeting the Flying Pickets in Taiwan, Idea of North in KL, Larry Detwiler of Joint Sound A Cappella, and Tobias Hug of the Swingle Singers all in one month! Totally mind-blowing and very inspirational. Kekeke In December, we take a break from Sunday Vocal Jam due to over-packed performance and vacation schedules of everyone involved but we look forward to seeing you again in January! So, here’s to a wonderful Christmas and a meaningful New Year!

Yours In Harmony Angie

(1) FEATURES THE NOTATIONS IN TAIWAN

TAS' resident (school tour) a cappella group, The Notations, visited Taiwan together on their first overseas gig and got the opportunity to sing at the Taiwan A Cappella Festival during the 1st Asian Collegiate A Cappella Competition. This amazing journey brought 2 local junior college groups, Dischordant (RJC) and VoiceBox (River Valley Alumni) to Taiwan for the competition. Dischordant won the ‘Best Arrangement’ title competition while the top prize wne to Taiwanese group H202. More info at www.chinesea-cappella.com

NOVEMBER VOCAL JAM - THE WICKED PITCHES
In November, we were invited to host SVJ at the new arts centre at The Old Parliament. We had visitors from Kuala Lumpur – The Wicked Pictches, who gallantly sang Dahil Sayo upon request. We also featured a slightly different programme by having new group SWAT perform alongside a ‘graduating’ a cappella class from Temasek Poly group and of course Resonance. If you missed us at SVJ, check us out here!

The House Jacks in Singapore!!

Review: Our local percussionist star, Peter Huang opened the show for the House Jacks (HJs). He introduced a song or 2 from his debut solo album which the instruments were vocalised by him using layering to create a 'band sound'. However, the audience didn't take to his performance. It was grating to the ears when he made certain sounds: more like noise than music to the ears. There was a slight limp in his leg since his recovery from an accident, which prevented him from dancing around the stage too much. I think it's better that he sticks to his vocal percussion than his weak singing or hiphop rap. People were more impressed with his percussion than him singing or rapping. Good & tight harmony I would say. If you have heard Wes Carrol, the group percussionist, Peter Huang seem amateurish. Real solid vocal percussion from Wes. The bass is Bert Bacco, showing off his really deep rumble. Next is Deke Sharon and Garth Kravitis, the group's vocal instrumentalist wh
