NERI PER CASO AT OUR VOCAL JAM!
Submitted By Rosalind Tan

Those of you who missed the vocal jam on Sunday 28 March 2004 really missed a wonderful treat. And I say this not only because Neri Per Caso, the Italian sextet A Capella group performed as part of the opening celebrations of the Arts House. Rather the atmosphere and our local artist Huang Lie Chuan ensured a proper build up to the Neri Per Caso show - The Arts House was appropriately decked with some of the local “arts scene glitteria” chatting animatedly in the corridor outside the auditorium; there was excitement in the air – and the seats filled up very quickly and late comers gathered around the doors.

That afternoon’s activity commenced with Angie who whipped the audience into physical and vocal gymnastics. We sang rounds and canons for warm ups. Members of Neri Per Caso dressed in simple black Tees streamed in and sat dispersed among the ordinary mortals present. Angie put us through our paces in her own inimitable way, joined in by members of Neri Per Caso. A warm and bohemian mood engulfed the gathering – everyone was game to try coaxing sounds from their throats.

This was followed by Beat Boxer Lie Chuan who enthralled the audience with his “spitting” – producing initially single dimensional drum sounds and then building up to a marvelous combination of sounds of bass, drums and cymbals from merely pursing or stretching his lips and controlling his throat Boy, it was educational – Lie Chuan made it all seem so effortless. However, when the cajoled audience attempted “spitting” too, the sound produced was far from “bass-like” – ok it was not a piece of cake after all!

And it was at that stage that the 6 member Italian sextet came on stage, introducing themselves through an interpreter. “Neri Per Caso” means “Black by Chance” – the name came about when the members ended up dressing in black whenever stumped on what to wear. The members knew each other for a long time before coming together as an A Cappella group – in fact two pairs are cousins. While English might not be their forte, their music certainly transcends any language limitations.

I don’t know about others present but that informal air gave me a feeling of being enveloped in a gathering of family and friends. Without any musical instrument, the auditorium was filled with the sounds of drums, bass and brass as if there was a full band accompaniment – all this achieved with lips, throat and other body movements, including appropriate chest thumping.

Some technical glitches with some microphones not working, irritated a little but did not mar the occasion as the group turned that irritation into an opportunity to joke in charming Italian accented English. The audience was clearly charmed by the music that flowed so easily from the group and enthusiastically attempted to follow the directions of the sextet. Neri Per Caso performed for about 40 minutes and all too soon it was over. I left with a heady sense of benevolence – definitely on a high and thirsting for more.

The House Jacks in Singapore!!

Review: Our local percussionist star, Peter Huang opened the show for the House Jacks (HJs). He introduced a song or 2 from his debut solo album which the instruments were vocalised by him using layering to create a 'band sound'. However, the audience didn't take to his performance. It was grating to the ears when he made certain sounds: more like noise than music to the ears. There was a slight limp in his leg since his recovery from an accident, which prevented him from dancing around the stage too much. I think it's better that he sticks to his vocal percussion than his weak singing or hiphop rap. People were more impressed with his percussion than him singing or rapping. Good & tight harmony I would say. If you have heard Wes Carrol, the group percussionist, Peter Huang seem amateurish. Real solid vocal percussion from Wes. The bass is Bert Bacco, showing off his really deep rumble. Next is Deke Sharon and Garth Kravitis, the group's vocal instrumentalist wh
