Budak Pantai's Very Late Valentine performance, 18 Mar 2005

For those who missed Budak Pantai's Very Late Valentine performance on 18 Mar 2005. Here's the low-down. ....

Mike greeted the audience & thanked 2 frans for the blog built for Budak Pantai @ http://budakpantai.motime.com + cake & asked those who went to west coast park except for the 2 frans he mentioned. The set is as follows:

  • Ai Hen Jian Dan: BP opened with this song & mentioned that they only understood were the english lyrics + wo ai ni!!
  • Yue Liang: Gordon pointed to the moon while singing in his exaggerated way. Mike commented abt the half moon after the song.
  • Cake song: Mike commented dat they had to use the cake given to them as their prop!! Mike ate & choked on it!!
  • Titanic: It is done with a chicken accent becos of the year of the Chicken. Couldn't believe my ears! Despite BP mentioning that"Titanic " would be last performed @ Esplanade but they still did the blog request anyway! Both Gordon & Mike did realli good chicken 'sounds' wiv chicken talk!! They both had everyone laughing away, including Joe & Kah Keh that they almost couldn't sing properly!! Way to go!! Gordon & Mike - the chicken duo!!
  • Abba: as a dedication for those having exams in TP. Version 2 with the indian-accented interlude For the 1st time, Kah Keh actually joked with his ending line... "i used to be the girl with the golden hair.." Danny looked @ him surprised...
  • Bukan Cinta Biasa: a song for our Malay frens, lead sung by Joe.
  • Pedro's Song: act-cum-song done to the tune of Maroon 5's "This Love". shows that BP do take note of the current songs... =)
  • One Way Ticket: Gordon spoke in his Malay accent. Gordon & Mike were sing-cooking up some story while dissing each other by defending that they only know this kind of accents!
  • All Rice: written by Joe who described it as a potential + experimental rice commercial song, inspired after seeing the rice ad featuring Kit Chan. It is a combination of Blue's "All Rise" + Maroon 5 's "Pedro's Song" with BP butchering the lyrics a la Budak style!! Joe asked if anyone works for Khong Guan or Songhe. Mike later commented jokingly that there's no influential ppl around them, after seeing no one put their hands up! Gordon later pointed out to Mike that Khong Guan sells biscuits as in Khong Guan Biscuit who had no inkling what Khong Guan is! Then he started dissing Mike by remarking "can you believe he's Singapore's Brainiest Lawyer?!?" "what about the rest of the lawyers?" The crowd was like laughing away & loved it!
  • End of the Road/Right here waiting: since mike didn play the violin, BP juz hummed wherever the violin parts were... Mike said he took the violin until grd 7 n stopped, piano til grade 3 n stopped and he wanted to take the cello but his legs weren't wide enough! Then the audience started to hoot with laughter... then interval...
  • Anybodys birthday: BP sang this song to this gal known as Tammy whom her frens requested a birthday dedication to her.
  • Sim Ai Eh: Gordon provided English translation with his "I-am-Sean-Connery-as-James-Bond" voice. Mike forgot his lyrics halfway thru the song but was quickly prompted by Gordon.
  • No Matter What: The encore piece despite shouts of other songs. BP asked the audience to singalong if they know the lyrics.

The performance ended with a joyful note & seen BP scrambling around, signing autographs on their CDs & talking to fans. Great night for a stressful week!

The House Jacks in Singapore!!

Review: Our local percussionist star, Peter Huang opened the show for the House Jacks (HJs). He introduced a song or 2 from his debut solo album which the instruments were vocalised by him using layering to create a 'band sound'. However, the audience didn't take to his performance. It was grating to the ears when he made certain sounds: more like noise than music to the ears. There was a slight limp in his leg since his recovery from an accident, which prevented him from dancing around the stage too much. I think it's better that he sticks to his vocal percussion than his weak singing or hiphop rap. People were more impressed with his percussion than him singing or rapping. Good & tight harmony I would say. If you have heard Wes Carrol, the group percussionist, Peter Huang seem amateurish. Real solid vocal percussion from Wes. The bass is Bert Bacco, showing off his really deep rumble. Next is Deke Sharon and Garth Kravitis, the group's vocal instrumentalist wh
