Happy April everyone!

I hope you have been well – it’s the season for flu and sore throats. Be sure to drink loads of water!

This issue of the newsletter brings you updates on a full list of workshops and concerts coming your way soon – do check them out and get your tickets soon.

Do not forget to keep voting for Juz B as they compete their way into the top spot in the Superband Competition. So far they have been doing excellently, scoring the highest points given out by the judges. Kudos guys!

(1) FEATURES

CAMP A CAPPELLA 101

Camp A Cappella 101 will be held this year on June 4th (Sat) from 9am – 5pm. Mr Larry Detwiler who has over 15 years of experience in training a cappella ensembles and arranging countless musical scores for a cappella groups, will be leading the camp this June.

This camp is targeted at singers who have not attended any a cappella training workshops or camps before.

Limited seats available at $25 for a full day music camp which includes topics ranging from Singing Technique, Solo Singing Technique, Starting and Managing a group, singing 2 songs, choreography, microphone technique and presentation technique.

(2) NATIONAL A CAPPELLA CHAMPIONSHIPS 2006

The date of the competition is confirmed for 3rd week July at the Esplanade Concourse.

Groups who sign up before the 1st of July will be entitled to attend the Pop Singing (full day) workshop by Annie Nepomuceno (Philippines) for FREE.

For new groups who are considering competing in this year’s National Championships, please give us a buzz at angie@a-cappella.org.sg for more details.

Mentors in the form of singers from leading groups are available to donate their time to assisting your with feedback and or masterclasses for FREE. Let us know if you need help starting up or with your music or with ideas.


(3) TAS SINGERS (Repeat)

Looking for an avenue to pick up some a cappella singing skills? Training and rehearsals will be conducted once a week at a central location for 3 hours each time at a low cost of $60 a month. The mission is to provide training and or re-training to singers who’ve been too busy working and who are looking for a fun and friendly environment to put some a cappella songs together. Depending on the quality and progress of development, there will be performance opportunities as well. (Singers aged : 25 and up)

(4) JUZ B DOING GREAT ON SUPERBAND!

The only a cappella group left in the nation-wide band competition is doing us proud and came away recently with the highest scores from the judges. All they need now is continuous support from fans and friends and we can all play a HUGE part in ensuring a cappella gets represented all the way to the Grand Finals and WINs! J

Somethingood is back again - first held in June 2004, this year it's a busking festival in aid of the Bone Marrow Donor Programme http://www.bmdp.org.

Musician, singer, dancer or street artist; BMDP is looking for people to make the streets of Orchard a different place for two weeks and the days of leukaemia-stricken children brighter for a lifetime. The House Jacks in Singapore!!

Review: Our local percussionist star, Peter Huang opened the show for the House Jacks (HJs). He introduced a song or 2 from his debut solo album which the instruments were vocalised by him using layering to create a 'band sound'. However, the audience didn't take to his performance. It was grating to the ears when he made certain sounds: more like noise than music to the ears. There was a slight limp in his leg since his recovery from an accident, which prevented him from dancing around the stage too much. I think it's better that he sticks to his vocal percussion than his weak singing or hiphop rap. People were more impressed with his percussion than him singing or rapping. Good & tight harmony I would say. If you have heard Wes Carrol, the group percussionist, Peter Huang seem amateurish. Real solid vocal percussion from Wes. International A Cappella Festival for 2009 info

INTERNATIONAL A CAPPELLA FESTIVAL 14 -18OCT 2009 The A Cappella Society would like to invite you to our International A Cappella Festival for 2009. The Festival will take place at the Esplanade Recital Studio and The Arts House Chamber. It will be spread over a period of 5 days, beginning on the 14th of October 2009 and ending on the 18th of October 2009. The International A Cappella Festival will showcase performances from 4 different foreign groups compromising of Permanent Fish from Japan, Rock 4 from The Netherlands, MayTree from Korea and Tux from The Philippines. This year’s line up of a cappella teams features a variety of musical styles with rock music from Queen, Police & Sting by Rock 4 (Netherlands), Pop from Permanent Fish (Japan), Korean Pop from MayTree and the golden oldies and familiar favorites from Tux (Philippines). Lao Langs @ Central S'pore
