SHINE Budding Singers!

An annual national event, National A Cappella Championships 06 organized by The A Cappella Society is one that many a cappella enthusiasts look forward to. Held at the Esplanade Concourse on 20th July 2006, it welcomed groups from various categories - the High School, College and Open Category.

An annual national event, the National A Cappella Championships, organized by The A Cappella Society, is one of the key events in the calendar of many a cappella enthusiasts. Held at the Esplanade Concourse on 20th July 2006, this event attracted several groups of singers of all ages, dividing them into three competing categories: the High School, College and Open Category. Prizes are awarded to the best group of each category, as well as to the overall best soloist, vocal percussionist, and the best recordable song.

In lieu with The A Cappella Society’s mission to develop the local a cappella scene, this annual event serves as a platform to help propel the performance expertise of young singers to greater heights. It is a perfect opportunity to educate, inspire and develop a vibrant community of contemporary a cappella enthusiasts towards an international standard of performance. Dating back to 2004, the first of this a cappella competition series held in Singapore was the Harmony Awards, originally organised by CHIJMES. The National A Cappella Championships have since taken over the Harmony Awards. This year, it is part of the SHINE Festival, a youth project organized by MCYS & National Youth Council.

A total of 16 groups joined this competition, a significant increase from the 8 groups that participated last year. Prior to this competition, the participants had a workshop held in the same week, conducted by one of the judges, award-winning singer/ song writer Ms Annie Nepomuceno from III of A Kind (Philippines). The class focused on solo delivery, singing technique and stage craft, key tactics that seemed to have indeed enhanced the groups’ performances as many beautifully delivered their diverse range of song items consisting of fast and slow songs, golden oldies and latest hits, in English, Chinese and even some foreign titles.

Many came with the hope of widening their musical exposure, while some stopped while walking through the Esplanade. “I’m from choir and am also interested to try out a cappella. I heard of this event through friends and decided to come down and take a look! Indeed, it is an eye-opener through the many experienced groups! It’s cool!” “We happened to walk through Esplanade and stopped to take a look at the performance. Some groups are indeed very professional and good. Especially the winning teams.”

It was definitely an evening of beautifully blended voices that it was difficult for the judges to make a decision to crown the champions. “It was great to see so many groups participating this year, and the overall standard has improved tremendously too.” one of the judges commented before announcing the winners. This year’s champions for the High School, College and Open Category are, respectively, TAG, from Temasek Secondary School, Resonance, from National University of Singapore and Equivox, a young, vibrant a cappella group made up of graduates formerly from NUS Resonance as well. Equivox also swept the awards for vocal percussionist of the year and the best recordable song, winning them the opportunity to record their lively, self-arranged winning piece Nan Ping Wan Zhong with T2 Productions.

The night ended with the 3 deserving champions and an entertaining performance by Juz B, this year’s host group for the National A Cappella Championships. This all-male Malay a cappella group may perhaps be better known by their crowd-pleasing arrangements and endearing performance of several Chinese pop hits in Superband, where they have captured the attention of many young audiences. In the years to come, we would definitely see many of these budding young a cappella singers in the industry as they continue to propel the standard of performing arts in Singapore.

The House Jacks in Singapore!!

Review: Our local percussionist star, Peter Huang opened the show for the House Jacks (HJs). He introduced a song or 2 from his debut solo album which the instruments were vocalised by him using layering to create a 'band sound'. However, the audience didn't take to his performance. It was grating to the ears when he made certain sounds: more like noise than music to the ears. There was a slight limp in his leg since his recovery from an accident, which prevented him from dancing around the stage too much. I think it's better that he sticks to his vocal percussion than his weak singing or hiphop rap. People were more impressed with his percussion than him singing or rapping. Good & tight harmony I would say. If you have heard Wes Carrol, the group percussionist, Peter Huang seem amateurish. Real solid vocal percussion from Wes. The bass is Bert Bacco, showing off his really deep rumble. Next is Deke Sharon and Garth Kravitis, the group's vocal instrumentalist wh
