From the Desk of The A Cappella Society ~ NOVEMBER 2007

As the year comes to a close, the A Cappella events we have to offer are bursting at the seams. For one, you should expect to see Camp A Cappella 2007 on your schedule. This year, it will be held at SMU* (to be confirmed) featuring one of the most interesting arrays of class topics in years to come on top of an exciting group of instructors.

And if that?s not quite enough, Rockappella and M-Pact will be back in town! With so many events coming your way, there?s no way that you can?t satisfy your A Cappella cravings.

On the other hand, we will also be putting up a list of school-based A Cappella groups just to show how A Cappella has developed in our little sunny island. We invite members of such groups to email us with details of their groups.

Have a happy November!

Camp A Cappella 07

Our annual 2-day singing camp will again bring singers through 2 songs from the drawing board to the performing stage. Each participant will be actively engaged in all workshops, working on singing technique, harmony and presentation. Then, all participants will be split into youth and adult groups to perform these 2 songs at the end of the weekend.

Expect a surprising cocktail of workshops conducted by qualified instructors! All modules are open to everyone. Camp A Cappella 07 aims to help participants to be able to sing not just the 2 selected songs, but to equip them with intermediate to advanced skills that will be essential in their journey through A Cappella. The topics include singing technique, warm up technique, voice maintenance, stage craft, ear training, group management, choreography, vocal percussion and more.

This year we explore improvisational singing through Circle Song aka Bobby McFerrin, learn to sing an Indonesia Dangdut and a 3rd pop piece.

17-18 November, 9am-5pm, Lasalle College of the ArtsTickets are $20-$50, available from The A Cappella Society

Contemporary Vocal Technique

Are you confused by all the terms you hear bout singing? Can you decipher and more importantly use your voice for a variety of singing styles?

This course aims to provide singers with a good foundation in singing technique (posture, breathing, anatomy, support, tone production) and then guide you on how you can use your voice for a variety of musical genres as apposed to just choir singing or operatic singing or just pop singing.

Singers will go through the 8 sessions exploring first the foundations of good singing habits and following that, attempt to sing at least 4 songs of different musical genres. A follow up class that focuses on repertoire building or a specific genre will be available then after. At the end of the 8 sessions, there will be a short recital of songs by each student.
The next course starts 20 November 2007 (Tues) for 8 sessions 7pm ? 9pm, Trainer: Angelina Choo, $250

The House Jacks in Singapore!!

Review: Our local percussionist star, Peter Huang opened the show for the House Jacks (HJs). He introduced a song or 2 from his debut solo album which the instruments were vocalised by him using layering to create a 'band sound'. However, the audience didn't take to his performance. It was grating to the ears when he made certain sounds: more like noise than music to the ears. There was a slight limp in his leg since his recovery from an accident, which prevented him from dancing around the stage too much. I think it's better that he sticks to his vocal percussion than his weak singing or hiphop rap. People were more impressed with his percussion than him singing or rapping. Good & tight harmony I would say. If you have heard Wes Carrol, the group percussionist, Peter Huang seem amateurish. Real solid vocal percussion from Wes. The bass is Bert Bacco, showing off his really deep rumble. Next is Deke Sharon and Garth Kravitis, the group's vocal instrumentalist wh
