VOCAL MANIA 2009

Next
year, our showcase concert of school choirs and A Cappella groups will return to a date in March. The choirs from 8 participating schools will get an opportunity to rehearse and present their Singapore Youth Festival songs in a concert setting in one of Singapore's top Concert Hall.

EXPLORATIONS: NATURALLY 7 VOCAL WORKSHOP
A Naturally Seven workshop is a journey behind the scenes with the band. We allow you to join us on our side of the creative process - the arranging, writing, producing, singing and imitating of instruments - not only demonstrations, but what, why and how we are thinking. During this time we'll take the band apart and put it back together again. It's going to be a lot of fun.

THE ARTS HOUSE 5TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

Formerly Singapore's Parliament House, The Arts House celebrates five years as a venue blending art with heritage and lifestyle. The Arts House 5th Anniversary Celebrations festival will showcase works by Singaporean artists in a variety of genres and forms. Our very own TAS Singers will also be performing for the event.

YOUTH VOICES - CREATING OUR VOCAL LANDSCAPE

A concert that will present the music of a cappella greats like Anders Enderoth, Andrea Figallo, Michelle Weir, Jens Johansen, Deke Sharon, Randy Crenshaw and many more.

This concert will present the ensembles of The A Cappella Society, showcasing their prowess for contemporary choral, pop and jazz a cappella performance.

Our ensembles have been created to provide an avenue for local singers to cultivate good musical foundation in theory and practical practice in voice and we aim to grow each team to reach international standards of contemporary vocal performance.

Featuring: TAS Youth Choir, TAS Youth Ensemble, NANU Petite, JOTB (all male team), TAS Children's Choir* conducted by Mrs Angelina Choo-Sassarak.

THE YALE ALLEY CATS
As one of the US’s most renowned a cappella groups, the Yale Alley Cats, a fourteen-person all-male a cappella ensemble, have been spreading music around the world since 1943. They find their roots in jazz, but the repertoire has grown to include Motown, pop, classical, and many more genres. The diverse song list and acknowledged musical excellence allows the group to perform at a host of different venues, from jazz clubs to embassies, from the set of NBC’s “The West Wing” to the main stage at the Dresden Music Festival, from the beaches of Hawaii to “Martha Stewart Living,” and from Parisian squares and Spanish boulevards to the hallowed halls of Yale university.

POP VOCALS FOR BEGINNERS
Learn the fundamentals of singing in the style of Beyonce, Rihanna and other pop divas in this course! Singapore's soul sensation, Lim Huimin takes you on a musical exploration of the basics in pop singing, including securing breath control, posture, voice projection and singing through songs. Apart from pop & jazz vocal exercises that will help keep your voice in shape, you will also explore a variety of pop, jazz, mandarin songs and even ballads. This course aims to provide singers with a good foundation in singing technique (posture, breathing, anatomy, support, tone production) and then guide you on how you can use your voice for a variety of musical genres. ADVANCED VOCALS COURSE


A course for singers who are searching for assistance or input in continued vocal development not only in technique but in styling and exploring grooves within multiple genres of music.
Learn the tricks of the trade on how to develop emotion in your singing, start at developing a range of tone colours in your voice, explore different styles of music and search to release that true diva in you!

A CAPPELLA ENSEMBLE COURSE


Come explore contemporary a cappella with the TAS adult ensemble as we embark on a 3-month journey through the world of the human voice. This twelve-week series of seminars-cum-rehearsals culminating in a public presentation promises to equip you with the fundamental skills of a cappella performance. Experienced clinicians will lead you and your fellow singers through a discussion of various topics, including i) recent developments in a cappella music, ii) elements of blend in close harmony, iii) dynamic microphone technique, iv) an introduction to vocal percussion, and iv) basic staging and song presentation. You will also be guided through the rehearsal of 3-4 songs from a variety of genres to practice your new found knowledge.
Next course starts in May.

MUSIC THEORY COURSE: (WED) 7pm – 9pm


Our new Music Theory course brings the uninitiated on a journey through music in study, performance and composition, ranging from the very fundamental note reading to a more profound analysis of styles and their development through time. So join us today, for our newly launched Music Theory Course! Learn to differentiate the "towkays" in this course and unleash your potential to sight singing. This course conducted by Ms Evangeline Tan will guide you through the fundamentals of music, learning to read rhythm patterns & notation effectively.

(5) AUDITIONS


THE A CAPPELLA SOCIETY CHILDREN'S POP AND JAZZ CHOIR
Finally a choir where children can explore folk, pop and jazz music intrinsically through play, performance and theory.
Opened to singers aged 8 to 13, this choir seeks to develop young singers with a good foundation in vocal technique, performance etiquette, musical development and artistic discipline.

The choir will be directed by Angelina Choo-Sassarak, Artistic Director of The A Cappella Society.

THE A CAPPELLA SOCIETY YOUTH VOICES AND ADULT TEAM


Want to learn the techniques of harmonising? Or simply want to immerse yourself in singing in a group? Here's your chance now! Auditions are now open for the youth voices (aged 13- 20) [practices are every Saturday 3pm-6pm.] and the adult team (aged 21 and above) [practices are every Monday 7.30pm]. (6) ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAMME 2009/10


For the next two years we can offer your school two programmes that are NAC approved and eligible for Tote Board subsidy:


ROCK POP A CAPPELLA WITH NANU


The program presents A Cappella singing through an interactive session and demonstrates different styles and how a song is put together. It is a hands-on approach to exploring a cappella singing and vocal percussing. Hosted by a team from The A Cappella Society singing as an a cappella vocal band made up of professional singers, musicians and teachers, the session will introduce 3 tips in singing and share Vocal Percussion tips. Volunteer participation will be encouraged throughout the show and as a result the students will enjoy a highly interactive and very enjoyable and exciting presentation.


A CAPPELLA VOCAL JAM


This light-hearted and highly interactive a cappella jam session will include tips on vocal technique and will encourage the general mass audience to take part in simple and repetitive musical stanzas that are built up into songs. This will be presented with the use of theater stage skills which will help in creating a better atmosphere for the audience to be willing to try their hand at making some music! The simple structure will give the students inspiration to make more of their own tunes come alive with imagination and creativity. Led by two veteran a cappella singers and performers, this session promises to be entertaining, inspiring and intriguing.

The House Jacks in Singapore!!

Review: Our local percussionist star, Peter Huang opened the show for the House Jacks (HJs). He introduced a song or 2 from his debut solo album which the instruments were vocalised by him using layering to create a 'band sound'. However, the audience didn't take to his performance. It was grating to the ears when he made certain sounds: more like noise than music to the ears. There was a slight limp in his leg since his recovery from an accident, which prevented him from dancing around the stage too much. I think it's better that he sticks to his vocal percussion than his weak singing or hiphop rap. People were more impressed with his percussion than him singing or rapping. Good & tight harmony I would say. If you have heard Wes Carrol, the group percussionist, Peter Huang seem amateurish. Real solid vocal percussion from Wes. INTERNATIONAL A CAPPELLA FESTIVAL 14 -18OCT 2009 The A Cappella Society would like to invite you to our International A Cappella Festival for 2009. The Festival will take place at the Esplanade Recital Studio and The Arts House Chamber. It will be spread over a period of 5 days, beginning on the 14th of October 2009 and ending on the 18th of October 2009. The International A Cappella Festival will showcase performances from 4 different foreign groups compromising of Permanent Fish from Japan, Rock 4 from The Netherlands, MayTree from Korea and Tux from The Philippines. This year’s line up of a cappella teams features a variety of musical styles with rock music from Queen, Police & Sting by Rock 4 (Netherlands), Pop from Permanent Fish (Japan), Korean Pop from MayTree and the golden oldies and familiar favorites from Tux (Philippines).
