From The Desk Of The A Cappella Society – January / February 2004 Gong Xi Fa Cai! Nian Nian You Yu! And a Happy Hari Raya Haji to all!

A blazing start to the new year for us here at TAS! We have lots in store in the year of the monkey as we set our sights on developingour prorgamming extensively and intensively! Keep us in your thoughts and prayers and feel free to volunteer anytime! Step right up!

First up – Sunday Vocal Jam has found a permanent home for 2004 at our favourute haunt, Mox Café & Bar! Mr Mok and his team have kindly agreed to host us once a month. We start again in February! We are also working hard at putting the first A CappellaFest togetherthis 28th & 29th May and are awaiting to hear if we'll be included in the Ars Festival alongside other fascinating events this year. This concert will feature local groups, Wolu Singers, TicTacTone, Budak Pantai, Nanu, The Notations and more! This is also the first year that there will be a focus groups presenting original music and Asianpop hits amongst their regular staple of hit songs. Look out for moreinformation!

(1) FEATURES BUDAK SOUND-A-LIKE CONTEST In celebration of their 10th year together as our local a cappellaheroes, Budak started off the yearof the monkey with a competition onthe 16th of January at the Orchard YMCA. More news to come!

URBAN HARMONY SCHOOL TOUR 2004 UH Tour kicked off it's first performance last week with TheNotations. A brand new show with new repertoire, jam songs andcostumes. Definitely tighter harmonies and greater ensemble.Share the joys of a cappella music making with your students! EngageThe Notations for a performance at yoru school or engage the team topresent a vocal jam with your students (sing-a-long session). VOICES CARRY – A CAPPELLAFEST 2004
This first festival concert is slated for the end of May and willfeature a host of local talents! Wtach out for Budak Pantai, Nanu,The Notations, Tic Tac Tone, Wolu Singers and Resonance in a concertthat will present fantastic groups with a varied variety of styles.This concert is also the first initiative to present originalcontemporary compositions. (2) SUNDAY VOCAL JAM – FEBRUARY 2004
Join us at MOX Bar & Café from 3pm -5pm on the 22nd of February forour first jam of the year!You'll be treated to a special appearance by all-female a cappellagroup, nanu and Resonance will continue to lead us this year at the session.So folks who are looking for an anvenue to meet other talented singers as well as an avenue to just join in some casual a cappella singing in a fantastic environment – come join us! ** This event is also opened to non-singers who would like to experience a cappella music and just simply join in the fun.**

Please note that jam sessions are organised for the purpose of gathering singers and non-singers together. These sessions are not workshops or clinics. Special workshops will be available throughout the year for singers.

(4) 2004 NATIONAL COMPETITION (Various Categories)* Calling non-school-going a cappella groups!! Send us feedback andlet us know how you feel about us adding another category for adultgroups to compete in. We'd really like to hear from you.We are moving this competition to July 2004. We are hoping to draw afair amount of groups for both categories for Secondary School andthe other for College / University / ITE / Poly students and non-school groups for each category. Should you require a copy of the rules and regulations, please sendus an email. (Members of groups need not befrom the same school. Groups within the age categories who liveoutside of Singapore are also welcome to join us)

(5) ASIAN A CAPPELLA COMMUNITY UPDATES
PHILIPPINES – Submitted by Oscar Pantaleon Jr (CASA Ambassador)VOICES ON ITS SECOND YEAR:Voices is an a cappella singing competition sponsored by a localradio station. Eliminations are done in different malls across themetropolis and the finals is broadcast live by the station. One ofthe winners of the first competion - Akafellas - has gone mainstreamin the local music scene. We are eager to have at least one of this year's groups to make it to the pop circuit too.

UNIVERSITY STUDENTS LAY DOWN PLANS FOR COLLEGIATE COMPETITIONS:Civil engineering majors of the University of the Philippines plansto hold a nationwide collegiate contest.AKAFELLAS CAREER ON THE RISE:This group of guys did not make it to number one when they joinedVoices in 2002. Lady Luck, though, smiled at them and led them theway to the hearts of young a cappella enthusiasts in Manila. Theirgigs in clubs are always sold-out. A leading broadsheet even hadtheir faces splashed on the cover of their Sunday magazine with, ofcourse, an extensive article about them. The group is coming outwith an album in the first quarter of 2004 and MTV Philippines isfeaturing them as one of the artists to watch our for this year.

The House Jacks in Singapore!!

Review: Our local percussionist star, Peter Huang opened the show for the House Jacks (HJs). He introduced a song or 2 from his debut solo album which the instruments were vocalised by him using layering to create a 'band sound'. However, the audience didn't take to his performance. It was grating to the ears when he made certain sounds: more like noise than music to the ears. There was a slight limp in his leg since his recovery from an accident, which prevented him from dancing around the stage too much. I think it's better that he sticks to his vocal percussion than his weak singing or hiphop rap. People were more impressed with his percussion than him singing or rapping. Good & tight harmony I would say. If you have heard Wes Carrol, the group percussionist, Peter Huang seem amateurish. Real solid vocal percussion from Wes. International A Cappella Festival for 2009 info

INTERNATIONAL A CAPPELLA FESTIVAL 14 -18OCT 2009 The A Cappella Society would like to invite you to our International A Cappella Festival for 2009. The Festival will take place at the Esplanade Recital Studio and The Arts House Chamber. It will be spread over a period of 5 days, beginning on the 14th of October 2009 and ending on the 18th of October 2009. The International A Cappella Festival will showcase performances from 4 different foreign groups compromising of Permanent Fish from Japan, Rock 4 from The Netherlands, MayTree from Korea and Tux from The Philippines. This year’s line up of a cappella teams features a variety of musical styles with rock music from Queen, Police & Sting by Rock 4 (Netherlands), Pop from Permanent Fish (Japan), Korean Pop from MayTree and the golden oldies and familiar favorites from Tux (Philippines). Lao Langs @ Central S'pore
