From the Desk of The A Cappella Society, Feb 2005

Gong Xi Fa Cai! Nian Nian You Yu! This edition of the Singapore A Cappella Scene is brimming with news and updates!

In early February I had the pleasure of spending time with the guys of Jamaica Café when they were in town. From pigging out to just hanging out and talking about music and life, these unassuming gentlemen were the perfect guests. They also visited River Valley High School, Riverside Secondary and Pasir Ris Primary School in an effort to share a cappella music with students of all ages. And inspire they did! http://www.jamaica-cafe.com

In March, we hope to get some time with Cadence to share our Singapore food and music with them over dinner, so if you would like to meet up, contact us at zara@pacific.net.sg (We will try) The guys will be in town the 1st week of march for the Prudential Children First Festival organized by Act 3 International. Don't miss the shows!

Ok loads of auditions and performance opportunities. Take your time and savor the update over Chinese New Year goodies and take care not to lose your voices by over binging on those delicious treats! Gong Xi Gong Xi!

(2) JAMAICA CAFÉ in SINGAPORE

Indonesia’s hottest a cappella group Jamaica Café was in town last week to perform at the Rock Opera production by IMG Productions at the Esplanade.

This amazing sextet recently launched their first album in Jakarta and have already sold 15,000 copies there. Entitled Musik Mulut, this album consists of 10 tracks, mostly original Indonesian style pop ballads in the groove of Jamaica Café – which is very much influenced with that dash of Jamaican feel.

Learn more about them http://www.jamaica-cafe.com . The group has been singing together for 12 years now and was set up during their high school days as teens and have been inseparable ever since. The guys are down-to-earth and unassuming and totally awesome to work with! Support them by getting one of the few copies of their album in Singapore at $16 + $2 (postage & handling fee). Email us at zara@pacific.net.sg

(9) ASIAN UPDATES

JAKARTA A CAPPELLA COMMUNITY

The JIS A CappellaFest 05 in early Feb was spectacular. 3 groups performed for 2 evenings and guest group VIP from Korea amazed the crowd who leapt to their feet in thunderous applause after their set on Saturday night. Teachers’ group Vox Essentials also realized their dream for tighter harmony and blend at this festival and of course the starlets Joint Sound were just ravishing. From a talented classical singer to stunning pop soloists and consistent blend, this high school a cappella class surely worked the stage to their advantage! Confidence and the best teacher is everything! Kudos to Larry Detwiler, CASA’s Indonesian ambassador for organizing this programme every 2 years for the last 14 years or so!

KOREAN A CAPPELLA COMMUNITY

Korean CASA Ambassador, Hyunil Choi has set up a very successful programme entitled ACALIVESHOW which raises funds for staging more a cappella concerts through acting like an agent for local a cappella groups. What a wonderful way of supporting the community. Check out www.acaliveshow.com

The House Jacks in Singapore!!

Review: Our local percussionist star, Peter Huang opened the show for the House Jacks (HJs). He introduced a song or 2 from his debut solo album which the instruments were vocalised by him using layering to create a 'band sound'. However, the audience didn't take to his performance. It was grating to the ears when he made certain sounds: more like noise than music to the ears. There was a slight limp in his leg since his recovery from an accident, which prevented him from dancing around the stage too much. I think it's better that he sticks to his vocal percussion than his weak singing or hiphop rap. People were more impressed with his percussion than him singing or rapping. Good & tight harmony I would say. If you have heard Wes Carrol, the group percussionist, Peter Huang seem amateurish. Real solid vocal percussion from Wes. The bass is Bert Bacco, showing off his really deep rumble. Next is Deke Sharon and Garth Kravitis, the group's vocal instrumentalist wh
