Budak Pantai @ May Day concert

Budak Pantai @ NTUC May Day carnival 2005

Budak Pantai performed at the May Day carnival yesterday which was organised by NTUC as a family day alongside with other artistes such as Ning Baizurah, Frances Yip, Sylvester Sim and Taufik Batisah. They performed their signature tunes.
  1. One Way Ticket
  2. No Matter What
  3. Yue Liang
  4. Abba
  5. Sim Ai Eh

They opened with One Way Ticket, which is supposed to be dedicated to the NEL... Michael said that those who lived along the North East line wouild recognise it and got a standing ovation from the audience!

The 2nd song, No Matter What, one of BP's signature tunes & the song was as one song done in the Singaporean style... The audience obviously loved the Budak style of choreography for this song by the immense cheering!!

In Yue Liang, BP tried to get the audience to "pretend" that the big floating NTUC income balloon as the "moonlight". They guided the audience to sing along within the chorus of the tune...

Joe asked whether they are allowed to mention about their cds being on sale at the Esplanade cd shop. Then Michael "scolded" him for mentioning about that & asked Joe to repeat the question again... Then Michael defended himself that he didn't mention anything of that matter and got some guffaws from the crowd...

Then Danny strummed the intro for Abba... Towards the end, Michael joked about wanting to audition for the Ten Tenors before he went into his opera part within the song...

Michael then asked the audience whether they wanted an encore and asked his manager whether they could sing in Hokkien. Michael "confessed" that they can't memorise their word & that their last song is also "memorised" as well. He proceeded to explain that in the early days, in the province of Fujian (or Hokkien) , men flocked to Singapore to earn $$ for their women.

The last song was Sim Ai Eh, which Gordon provided an English translation for those who learnt Chinese since Pri 1... However, it was pretty obvious that Michael forgot the lyrics & "confessed" to the crowd. Luckily the rest of the Budaks remembered and "helped" him along... Such is the spirit of group chemistry!

The House Jacks in Singapore!!

Review: Our local percussionist star, Peter Huang opened the show for the House Jacks (HJs). He introduced a song or 2 from his debut solo album which the instruments were vocalised by him using layering to create a 'band sound'. However, the audience didn't take to his performance. It was grating to the ears when he made certain sounds: more like noise than music to the ears. There was a slight limp in his leg since his recovery from an accident, which prevented him from dancing around the stage too much. I think it's better that he sticks to his vocal percussion than his weak singing or hiphop rap. People were more impressed with his percussion than him singing or rapping. Good & tight harmony I would say. If you have heard Wes Carrol, the group percussionist, Peter Huang seem amateurish. Real solid vocal percussion from Wes. The bass is Bert Bacco, showing off his really deep rumble. Next is Deke Sharon and Garth Kravitis, the group's vocal instrumentalist wh
