Singapore A Cappella Scene Sep 2005

From the Desk of The A Cappella Society – September 05

Hello again everyone!

What a month this has been! We sold out for A CappellaFest and had a wonderful time with our groups, including guest group, Wicked Pitches from KL. Yes, and as reviews come, there is always something to learn from every event and every programme. Ha ha It’s true! One sliver lining in this event was our feature segment on Channel News Asia’s Singapore beat and Suria’s news beat. Local groups Tone, Tic Tac Tone, Juz B were featured along our friends the Wicked Pitches. Well done to all the groups who put their best foot forward and that too on a really large stage (and by that I mean size!!).

Thank you also to our sponsors the Arts Fund and the National Arts Council and our contributors, Alex and Ivan who designed our flyers and logo and to Valentia Heng for the T-shirt layout and of course our youth team who are always there to lend a helping hand, from copy writing to manual labour and support. Kudos!

Lots of new tidbits in this edition as we catch up on our schedule. Read all about the Magnets who are in town today – catch the hotties at the Raffles City this Fri at 12pm – see you there! More updates on concerts and auditions as well.

And right after this, we launch into preparations for Camp A Cappella on Dec 3rd & 4th and of course our favourite time of the year – Christmas! Stay tuned for more news!

Thank you again to everyone who has been supporting TAS and our programmes. We hope you will continue to grow with us!

A CAPPELLAFEST REVIEW by JOSIE NG : RANDOM THOUGHTS

For reading, please enlarge:

JuzB does have a good vocal percussionist ... although something seemed to be lacking in their performance. Perhaps it had to do with their busy schedule that day - they were recording for telly as well. Their Chinese number warmed the crowd, and the audience clapped along to their soulful rendition of "kau ilhamku".

Lao Lang's "dreams" were marred by timing problems. However, their creative rendition of "java jive" more than made up for it.

Upbeat delighted audiences with their "William Tell overture", but it got a bit Repetitive. It was all soothing to the ears with "embraceable you" and "Ob-la-di Ob-la-da".

Key Elements also injected local flavor into their version of "better than anything", using various foods as points of reference. "Its a 'wonderful" could have been even more wonderful if the lead actually did break into a little ballroom dancing!

The 2nd half started with a different beat - the beatboxing of BS All Stars, promptly sent hordes of fans screaming. He could sing and beatbox at the same time, rendering many jaws in the audience agape in awe.

TAG was up next. "Truly Madly Deeply" was expectedly a textbook redition with no surprises. Their take on "the lion sleeps tonight" had some effort at being different, and the vocal percussionist was not bad, but ... the lead for this song had serious pitch problems.

Tone were missing their lead female. i heard them at their Chinatown point gig during the festival of arts - although I cringed at her sickly sweet voice then, I appreciated her more after hearing them try to sing "mama mia" and "I do (cherish you)" without this female lead.

Verve Enharmonics let me believe I was in a blues bar. I held my breath during the whistling bit, waiting for the singer to err. I dont think he did. "Quando" was cheeky and the audience lapped it all up.

Next on the platter were the Wicked Pitches, who were a feast for the ears as well as the eyes. There was the swinging single, the evening gown, the leather pants, the auntie outfit and the basketball singlet. The hairband ears looked a bit like rabbit ears, but worked well for their rendition of "Teddys picnic". They completed a remarkable home run with a "rasa sayang medley".

Tic Tac Tone were the final act. They started with the upbeat "cha shao bao", although it might have been a slightly better song to close with. "Everlasting Love" turned out to the last song of the night technically without fault, but failed to give the euphoria that one typically ends a great night out with.

Incidentally, last year's acapellafest did just that - ending with a big number that got many in the audience standing and rocking along to "You only get what you give". My personal wish would be for spore groups to do more aurally creative arrangements.

The House Jacks in Singapore!!

Review: Our local percussionist star, Peter Huang opened the show for the House Jacks (HJs). He introduced a song or 2 from his debut solo album which the instruments were vocalised by him using layering to create a 'band sound'. However, the audience didn't take to his performance. It was grating to the ears when he made certain sounds: more like noise than music to the ears. There was a slight limp in his leg since his recovery from an accident, which prevented him from dancing around the stage too much. I think it's better that he sticks to his vocal percussion than his weak singing or hiphop rap. People were more impressed with his percussion than him singing or rapping. Good & tight harmony I would say. If you have heard Wes Carrol, the group percussionist, Peter Huang seem amateurish. Real solid vocal percussion from Wes. The bass is Bert Bacco, showing off his really deep rumble. Next is Deke Sharon and Garth Kravitis, the group's vocal instrumentalist wh
