Key Elements (KE), no doubt, is one of the most promising local a cappella groups around. They boast of having to arrange their own songs by 2 of their members. Their debut public concert, Jazz @ the Movies was one good concert if you are a lover of jazz music.
In the concert which was held on 5 Nov 2005 Sat at Victoria Concert Hall, KE proved to be able to perform a mixed bag of tunes, ranging from jazz to swing to pop well.
The opening tune "Do-Re-Mi" from all-too-familiar Sound of Music was given an ecletic arrangement by KE. However, the scatting part within the song was not too impressionable. "The Look of Love", a smooth and slick rendition was delivered by KE's alto, Hui Lian in a lovely bossa nova arrangement.
A familiar oldie of the late Theresa Teng, "Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin" was performed by KE's soprano, Suzanne who incidentally could sing the tune well with a pretty good pronounciation of the Chinese lyrics with a stirring soul. KE's lead vocal, Kim Beng delivered the jazz tune "Fly Me To The Moon" with a flair of his own which was really soothing to the ears.
KE ended the first half by providing an entertaining way of informing the audience about the intermission + promoting their debut single More Than Anything . What a great way to give the audience a "break" !
In this Latin number "Historia De Un Amor", Kim Beng attempts the original lingo in Latin, which KE jokingly told the audience that they were unable to provide English subtitles for this song. Benedict, KE's baritone sang Jay Chou's "Jian Dan Ai" which sounded muffled and the pronounciation of the Chinese lyrics was inaudible and I couldn't make out what he was singing.
However, his saving grace was the performance of a Gershwin number, "S'wonderful', an upbeat jazz tune from the musical Funny Face, which was so infectious that it makes you want to stand up & dance !
During the concert, glitches in the sound system appeared which affected the sound quality of the concert. However it didn't affect KE's ability to give a relaxed mood & jazzy flavour to the evening with their lovely arrangements of the jazz tunes from the movies.
