A Cappella showcase at S'pore Art Cafe, 21 Mar 2007

Indeed it was a feast for the ears and eyes as various groups performed for the a cappella showcase at the Singapore Art Cafe (SAC) on Wed, 21 March 2007. Indeed a cappella transcends beyond the physical ability where most a cappella groups have decent vocal quality. This idea is changed that evening by the opening performance by a young adult ensemble consisting of a mixture of physically abled young adults with the physically disabled with muscular dystrophy on wheelchair sang songs such as "Lion Sleeps Tonight" and a Chinese tune (title unknown). The ensemble delivered a heartfelt performance (everyone who turned up can testify to it) which won a warm applause from the audience ! Indeed a cappella is for everyone !

The next group, Resonance (3 groups from the a cappella club in NUS) gave a convincing performance as they consists of the 1st years and seniors. The 1st group of Resonance gave interesting renditions and twist to familiar oldies such as "Fire", "Why Do Fools Fall In Love", "My Girl", "Happy Together (Heineken ad)". Their rendition of Rockapella's "Change In My Life" sounded flat but thankfully the group sounded better in their version of Desiree's "You Gotta Be" though the background harmony in the song was messy. The 2nd group from Resonance's repertoire borders on the 90s hits such as "I Do" (by now-defunct 98 Degrees) and 80s disco hit"Heaven Is A Place On Earth" as well as a familiar Japanese song in "Sukiyaki" where an impressive trumpet solo within the song vocalized by one of its members drew a catcall from the audience. But all in all, Resonance is still a worthy act to look out for !

Last but not least, one of the alumni group from Resonance, VoCollision proved vocally better than their juniors. I was impressed by their rendition of Jay Chou's "Yi Lu Xiang Bei" and of course, their signature tune "Abba medley", a techno-flavoured with a light Indian-flavoured ditty insertion mixture of Abba tunes. The catchy arrangement in Abba got the audience clapping and highlighted the group's vocal prowess.

The House Jacks in Singapore!!

Review: Our local percussionist star, Peter Huang opened the show for the House Jacks (HJs). He introduced a song or 2 from his debut solo album which the instruments were vocalised by him using layering to create a 'band sound'. However, the audience didn't take to his performance. It was grating to the ears when he made certain sounds: more like noise than music to the ears. There was a slight limp in his leg since his recovery from an accident, which prevented him from dancing around the stage too much. I think it's better that he sticks to his vocal percussion than his weak singing or hiphop rap. People were more impressed with his percussion than him singing or rapping. Good & tight harmony I would say. If you have heard Wes Carrol, the group percussionist, Peter Huang seem amateurish. Real solid vocal percussion from Wes. The bass is Bert Bacco, showing off his really deep rumble. Next is Deke Sharon and Garth Kravitis, the group's vocal instrumentalist wh
