(7) A CAPPELLAFEST 06 REVIEW BY JOSIE A Cappella Fest 2006: Be!DAZZLED A review by Josie It just gets better every year. Having attended A Cappella Fest since 2004, I would expect the best. And in the words of one of the performers, I was rewarded with ?maximal pleasure?. So much so, I was there on both days! Upbeat === 2004 Open Winner The night started off disappointingly as the microphones of the lead singers, who were meant to sing a lovely boy-girl harmony, were faulty. But the audience was more than rewarded when the room was filled with their crisp pure tones with the Beatles' song, "I will", truly a cappella- without microphones. Upbeat went on to impress with King Singers' "I'm a Train" and "Rock around the clock", in which the latter I quite enjoyed. >>>Resonance === 2006 College Winner A sense of mystery was created with the dim lighting, artifical smoke and the haunting tones of Resonance singing Alanis Morissette's "Uninvited". Perhaps the backgrounds were a tad loud, making it difficult to appreciate the lead's voice. Their second choice of song, though done well, fell short of expectations as I still had vivid memories of Alicia Key's soulful rendition of "If I Ain't Got You" at the last MTV awards. I enjoyed their final piece, Evanescence's "Bring me to life" with the male lead's exuberant interjections of "Wake me up" during the song. >>>Equivox === 2006 Open Winner Equivox showed a little creativity by adding lines from Shane Ward's "No Promises" to their 1st piece Evanescence "My immortal". This was followed by a Shanghai Cabaret number, "Nan Ping Wan Zhong" featuring the guest lead, Shu Ying. I remembered this rendition more for their cutesy antics, one of which involved 4 beats of the Mario song followed by a turn of the head to the right when they were leaning forward. (One has to see this to understand!) The final piece was a lovely medley of Madonna songs such as "Material Girl", "Music", "Like a virgin" and "Hung up", which were also punctuated by flashes of ?kawaii? - this "innocent look" becoming most apt when singing "Like a virgin". >>>Nanu This group was all woman! And a male VP they borrowed from another group, Say Ping. There was a lot of talent and character in this group - perhaps too much talent as all 5 sang the lead during Janet Jackson's "Together Again" in their own unique way. They engaged the audience and had us begging for more even after Janet Jackson's "Escapade" and a medley of Destiny Child's songs including "I'm a survivor", "Independent Woman", and "Say My Name". I particularly fancied the mellow voice Hui Min during "Escapade". >>>Beat Society All Stars The second half started with the perennial favorite, the intense beatboxing executed by Zul and flanked by members from the same society. They clearly had their female fans who cheered their Music, all of which I believed were mostly original. Although I couldn't hear many of the words they rapped, I respect their enthusiasm in performing and keeping their songs current, such as featuring the ipod nano and using music from "Les Choristes". >>>TAS Youth Group Suddenly, the whole stage was filled with over a dozen bodies launching into their a cappella version of Jennifer Lopez's "Let's get loud". As quickly as they came on, they exited without so much of an introduction. Still, as teenagers struggling in the Singapore education system, I am impressed that such a large number of them came together to polish a song to such performance standards. >>>TAG Temask Acapella Group === 2006 High School Winner This was my favourite group of the evening! For their youthfulness, sincerity and good voices, it was difficult not to fall in love with them. Their 1st song was Stevie Wonder's "Isn't she Lovely" (Many may recall the version by Frank Sinatra instead). I only wished the female lead was a little louder. Their second song, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" was done without a fanciful arrangement but was given a fresh twist by the sultry voice of the 13 years-old male lead, Salid and the ever solid vocal percussion of Ryan, who was crowned "Beatboxer 2005". >>>Verve Enharmonics === 2005 Open Winner We are presented another cheeky group or rather, another group with very cheeky performers. Their opening number "Gei Wo Yi Ge Wen" (Give me a kiss) saw the audience shouting "Ke Yi" (can, in mandarin) as the lead sang the chorus. During the introduction of the group members which followed, the lead singer Joel introduced himself as the ?belly-dancer? of the group. Their 2nd piece Belayan Jiwa's (Malay for "gentle caressing of the soul") a gorgeous piece in itself, allowed Joel to showcase his near flawless falsetto. It was not until their final number that Verve danced a little, to the tune of Earth, Wind & Fire's "September", which got my vote for most memorable choreography, especially when they stood in a line and swayed from side to side. >>>Key Elements KE had a neat little introduction with members walking in one-by-one, slowly making up a fabulous seventh chord and then minced forward, singing in unison about themselves. They went on to jazz up the audience with "Bernie's tune" and The Real Group's "I Sing You Sing", injecting a humour into the latter which is in its essence a song about ear worms. Their final number was Robbue Dupree's "Hot Rod Hearts", a classic indeed! If I closed my eyes, I could see myself bobbing my head in the backseat of a Cadilac racing down America's bumpy desert highways with my mates on a roadtrip. >>>Juz B === Superband finalist There had to be a reason why the host of the evening, Afwan, looked so smart in his jacket. I did not realise he was part of Juz B, and was pleasantly surprised when it was his turn to take centre stage. A lot of the audience were waiting for Juz B (including a certain "Lien!"!) and they gave the audience what they wanted in the form of sleek dance moves while delivering Jason Mraz? "Geek in the Pink". For all those who missed Superband (like myself), the next song was to marvel at - "Mei Yi Ci He Ni Fen Kai" (Wang Lee Hom, Kiss Goodbye). So much so, there were some screams for an encore at this stage - Afwan retorted jokingly, "encore? Haven't finish yet, how to encore?". I did not understand most of the dialogue that followed which was Indonesian Malay, which set the scene for their rendition of one of Jamaica's Cafe's numbers. Another fast dance track followed in the form of Energy's "Cowboy". Finally, with Man Bai's "Kau Ilham Ku", the concert was wrapped up in all style and pyrotechnics.

The House Jacks in Singapore!!

Review: Our local percussionist star, Peter Huang opened the show for the House Jacks (HJs). He introduced a song or 2 from his debut solo album which the instruments were vocalised by him using layering to create a 'band sound'. However, the audience didn't take to his performance. It was grating to the ears when he made certain sounds: more like noise than music to the ears. There was a slight limp in his leg since his recovery from an accident, which prevented him from dancing around the stage too much. I think it's better that he sticks to his vocal percussion than his weak singing or hiphop rap. People were more impressed with his percussion than him singing or rapping. Good & tight harmony I would say. If you have heard Wes Carrol, the group percussionist, Peter Huang seem amateurish. Real solid vocal percussion from Wes. The bass is Bert Bacco, showing off his really deep rumble. Next is Deke Sharon and Garth Kravitis, the group's vocal instrumentalist wh
