Some Upbeat news !

Dear folks,

Below is an extract from an email from Leslie of UpBeat.

Dear friends of UpBeat,

Merry Christmas! Greetings from all 6 of us here at UpBeat A cappella.

We hope you are having a great Christmas weekend. We have spent the last few days carolling at several private events and have been having a great time singing the wonderful songs of the season. We would like to invite you to join us this Wednesday 27th December 2006 at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre for two 45min carolling sessions; 7.30pm - 8.15pm and 8.45pm to 9.30pm. Admission is free so bring along your friends and family. We are planning two different sets of repertoire so do stay for the whole two hours if you can!

We are praying that the weather will be good so both shows can go on as they will be cancelled if there is any hint of rain at all. However, we will likely be performing at the Esplanade Concourse on 22 Jan and 23 Jan 2007 (Mon and Tue) in the evening in a programme of Broadway tunes. Admission is once again free so do mark those dates down in your diaries first and we will give you more details closer to those dates!

We are also seriously considering having our second public concert sometime next year though we have yet to start planning out the details. We were very encouraged by the response to our first one in August 2005 and would like to put together a second one. Do feel free to email us if there are particular genres or song titles you would like to see included in our concert and we will try to accommodate your requests. Do drop us an email to say hi at any time and we will try to get back to you as soon as we can. We welcome any feedback or suggestions with regards to repertoire and performance.

See you, take care and have blessed Christmas and New Year weekends!

The House Jacks in Singapore!!

Review: Our local percussionist star, Peter Huang opened the show for the House Jacks (HJs). He introduced a song or 2 from his debut solo album which the instruments were vocalised by him using layering to create a 'band sound'. However, the audience didn't take to his performance. It was grating to the ears when he made certain sounds: more like noise than music to the ears. There was a slight limp in his leg since his recovery from an accident, which prevented him from dancing around the stage too much. I think it's better that he sticks to his vocal percussion than his weak singing or hiphop rap. People were more impressed with his percussion than him singing or rapping. Good & tight harmony I would say. If you have heard Wes Carrol, the group percussionist, Peter Huang seem amateurish. Real solid vocal percussion from Wes. The bass is Bert Bacco, showing off his really deep rumble. Next is Deke Sharon and Garth Kravitis, the group's vocal instrumentalist wh
