Vocaluptuous' "Lush.Pop. Jazz" concert review

Lush. Pop. Jazz.

The concert title certainly had me guessing what the evening would be like before I went for the concert. The Vocaluptuous that I had heard eons ago before the member change was a group with sleek and tight harmony with a very good jazzy feel. The group had undergone a 2-member change and it seemed to be for the better.

The evening was really lovely with a lush, snazzy retro-like backdrop (with a retro disco ball hung at the ceiling) which gives a overall, relaxed atmosphere which was almost lounge-like. Vocaluptuous gave an opening of "Take 5" whom i'm not too sure who sang the song originally. John, the latest member of the group sang convincingly as lead. Take 5 was given a local flavour treatment which had a hint of humor in it.

What really impressed was one of the songs which had a small insertion of Geylang Sipaku Geylang (which probably means come home in Malay) which was a lovely effort in the song product of John's collaboration with his brother. The song was accompanied with John as the keyboardist and the lovely Eunice Olsen joining in with the rest of the group to sing.

Thorughout the concert, the audience was entertained with funny anecdotes & fun poking at each other by Vocaluptuous. Which goes to show Vocaluptuous had "improved" in terms of the humor department which was agreeable with the audience. Vocaluptuous also proved to be versatile in their repertoire despite jazz-inflicted with rock (in Queen's We Will Rock You) and opera (they sang an aria - not too bad an effort). All this through the genius arranger of lush harmony of John. Thus the whole concert was really befitting its title and indeed Vocaluptuous had grown in its unique sound. A 5 star rating.

The House Jacks in Singapore!!

Review: Our local percussionist star, Peter Huang opened the show for the House Jacks (HJs). He introduced a song or 2 from his debut solo album which the instruments were vocalised by him using layering to create a 'band sound'. However, the audience didn't take to his performance. It was grating to the ears when he made certain sounds: more like noise than music to the ears. There was a slight limp in his leg since his recovery from an accident, which prevented him from dancing around the stage too much. I think it's better that he sticks to his vocal percussion than his weak singing or hiphop rap. People were more impressed with his percussion than him singing or rapping. Good & tight harmony I would say. If you have heard Wes Carrol, the group percussionist, Peter Huang seem amateurish. Real solid vocal percussion from Wes. The bass is Bert Bacco, showing off his really deep rumble. Next is Deke Sharon and Garth Kravitis, the group's vocal instrumentalist wh
